Im going to write another blog on binary opposite as the last lecture was based on new media on game play and i don't really no what i can talk about with that. the last blog i wrote on binary opposites was on harry potter and the way the characters are binary opposites on appearances.


im going to compare the characters in star wars and how the good people are represented as real people with powers and then the bad characters are represented as machines well most of them anyway.it not just the way the character is represented in this film the colours add to it as well so the different colour lightsabers are represented with colours so red for the bad and green blue for the good. 

Darth Vader is represented as a man in a black suit that allows him to breath ..the fact that he breaths heavy and you can here it rather clear and you cant see his eyes and has a deap voice all adds to the character...he also carries a red lightsaber.The fact that u cant see him adds to all the tension because u no that the machine is keeping him alive.




and then you have a character like yoda , which first off you don't no if he is a good character or not , but there are certain things that give it away the fact that he is green to start off with, helps as we no the goodies use green lightsabers. also he isn't dressed in dark colours like black like Darth Vader. i wanted to use theses to as opposites because i don't think they are as obvious as harry potter but still a good example.

Costume Werewolf

Based on the lecture i was thinking to myself that iconic and arbitrary are important things. and is there  right to answer to certain things being more iconic to each other, it was mentioned that Laura Croft has become more iconic as pixels have improved this made me think into the field of costume ...because pixels are becoming more iconic as they create movement and texture , does this mean they are more iconic than costumes and models as these create textures and well, for example would a animation of a werewolf be more iconic than a costume of a werewolf.

This then brought me on to the thought of films that include costume and animation combined together and therefore which characters become more iconic to the audience. a good example of this is Tim Burtons version of "Alice Returns To Wonderland". I began to look into some of the characters and wanted to compare the white rabbit to the mad hatter....the reason why i wanted to compare these two was because the mad hatter is mainly costume and has a actor "Johnny Depp" playing the character ....whereas the white rabbit is animated.

Which one of these characters is more iconic ?? 

i personally believe the mad hatter is more iconic, the reason why i say this is because he may be sightly strange but you can relate to him, even if he is strange. his costume is well constructed and puts the character in full swing he also has the makeup to help with the appearance, but when he starts to walk and talk you begin to get a complete aspect of what the character really represents.I find this very iconic, whereas the white rabbit is fully animated and when put next to the iconic character like the mad hatter you begin to notice the difference between animated and costume.

 Although the animation itself is very good and does look very realistic, you still come to the conclusion that this character is created. Don't get me wrong i think the animation itself looks very iconic the way the rabbit moves and the texture but i believe part of it gets taken away when u put it next to a real object or person. this is just my opinion of course i bet there are people out there that believe animation is more iconic as you can create a character from scratch rather than someone playing a character.

following the seminar we was talking about how binary opposite affect a lot of things in the films like the way their hair is represented and they way they are clothed and the colours they are represented in create the difference between good and bad, so i was watching harry potter and realised this is a good example you have a character like voldermort that is always dressed in black and has very pale skin and no hair and then you have a character like dumbeldore that has a long white beard and long white hair and is always dressed in gold or red.

i then was looking at some other characters like harry and realised that his hair is always styled in the films even when he gets into big fights but the way it is represented is very clean and well maintained however someone like malfroy that has very slicked back hair that represents that he is rather sly. this happens in many films , such as lord of the rings , blade runner , terminator and so on , the interesting thing is that it happens with out or knowledge , but you pick up on it so straight away you will no if a character is good or bad just by there appearance. you might even no what the character itself is like but straight away we can tell.

the colours they where go on so at the begging of the film they are put into groups harry is placed into grifindore , which is made to believe to be the good group with all the children sitting at the table smiling and then malfroy is put into slivering witch clearly isn't meant to be a good group as they are all dressed in dark green. overall i just wanted to show that binary opposites are represented in so many ways and we don't even notice it being done but when you look into it , it is done in a clever way.

I really enjoyed the lecture on intertextuality as i realised it is something that i do all the time with out realising and i am sure everybody does,it covers so many forms , like films , models , books and so on ...my main interest is in models and films the way it is used. first of models it would be used all the time as models are usually made of something weather it is a small version of a building or a character, or something completely different the main point that it would have been modelled from something. and then when you look at the model most of the time you no it is a model and what the model is of. this fascinates me as i find it strange how the human brain does this without us even realising. then you can go on to films and the way other films include parts used in other films for example the planet of the apes old and new one feature the same line, this is used all the time , not just in films cartoons as well as the simpsons always uses famous quotes and other famous characters that we pick up on before it is even suggested.

so with all this in mind i wanted to pick a particular topic and talk about it for a bit.

i picked the film "italian job" the reason why i chose this film was because there was the original version which was a very popular film at the time and still is today, and then they made a new version of it which also still is a popular film. however they made changes to the new one, as in properly the most famous part about the movie would be the 3 minis that where in the 3 different colours well they still used the 3 minis however they where the new mini coopers and therefore where different but you still new what the cars where without it suggesting it. the size difference in the cars was also rather different as the whole point of the first movie was the cars sizes as they where small cars that could get into the tiny gaps that normal cars couldn't which made them perfect for the bank jobs, the new cars however are still small but not as small which made you think well are they still going to be as good , but what they did in the new film was had motorbikes riding around which are obviously smaller than a car and still couldn't go the places the mini could. Overall what im trying to get to is that the cars are different and the the actors and the story line itself is changed a bit but you can still relate it to the original film rather easily all they had to do was put a poster up of the 3 cars and every1 new it was the italian job , they have also used the cars in adverts and people new the same that it was relating to the film so therefore i see this film as a good example of intertextuality.
